Our Ultimate Test: How Do We Act In An Emergency? How Fast?

This incident happened on the highway between Vang Vieng and Vientiane, Laos, on my way to the town where I uncovered the Secret War in Laos. In fact, it occurred earlier the same day. For the only time in my life, I witnessed a head-on collision between two large trucks. Only now, am I appreciating the symbolism and significance of this random occurance in the light of the life-changing purpose I was just about to grapple with. Incidentally, if my chronology gets scrambled, it’s simply because I write these incidents first in my journal and then type them here later. I don’t know how to shift the order of my blogs, so please bear with me.

Just this week, in mid-March, 2018, I have been discovering the answer to that existential question, “How will I act in an Emergency?” One can never know until something unexpected happens. Here’s what The Holy Spirit had to say about that ultimate test:

Oh my Holy Spirit! What do You have to say about all these Tests I’ve been having this week?

“That is up to you, Linda Layli, Layli Linda! Do you want to sit on this hotel couch, for the next twenty-four hours, taking My dictation on this subject, or do you want to set up your computer on a table somewhere around here, on the patio in the sun or in the dining room when breakfast is cleared away and maybe a fan or two is turned off?”

I want to get to work on whatever surface I can figure out! We do have something to say now, don’t we? And, the American Embassy, which I hope to quiz is closed over the weekend. What do You see changed about me, like I think you were mentioning today at dawn?

“I see something in you that I’ve seen before in My best, best soldiers! I don’t think you have written about yesterday’s accident yet. That terrible head-on collision between two trucks, which happened in view of your tour bus. And your immediate decision to flag oncoming cars approaching from both directions on the only open lane. No one took responsibility for that until you grabbed your long scarf and became the traffic cop, slowing and assigning passage through the disaster area, while, others pried off the crumpled driver’s door for three, bleeding occupants. The other truck, a huge oil tanker, was spilling black goo from its underside. A cigarette could have created a bomb blast bigger than those cluster bombs are capable of. But, you did not even think about that, or any other risk, except potential danger to more traffic trying to filter past the obstruction.

You surely did not want to abandon your responsibility when the Tour Leader insisted that you return to the bus so it could be moved from its spot on the roadside. All the passengers were calling you also! Just like the night in Chiang Mai, when you were defending your “possibly-rogue” friend who was being pursued by three men with broken pool cue sticks.

My God! Linda Layli! You do lay your life on the line and then, suffer real, and really bad, greatest-disappointment when you are not allowed by your friends to finish the job.”

I know! That’s a brand-new, powerful and very visceral, good-feeling sensation inside of me! Each time that I’m called off, I am so frustrated that it’s a physical regret! And, my glinting-eye thing, too. It lasts longer because no one can take that away, and it must relax on its own when I calm down. But, boy, is it powerful when it’s shining bright! I feel as if I must look very stern and forbidding and unpretty when that’s going on! What do You think?

“Do you think you are pretty anyway? Usually?”

Yes, ish! I never have been actually pretty but when I smile happily, my pictures look pretty good…. for an old lady!

“Okay, that’s true! I can’t talk anymore. There are things that you just can’t know until you come Up Here and that may take a long, long, long time (ad infinitum on the longs). Okay, let’s get set up!!”

Okay, but don’t make it toooo long! I’m “pretty Eager Beaver,” You know! To get Up There and find out what You look like!

“Fair enough! Fair enough! (ad infinitum).
